National Lottery funded project Polli:Nation wins ‘Best Environment Project in 2018’
Polli:Nation is a UK wide initiative supporting pupils from 260 schools across the UK to turn their school grounds into pollinator friendly habitats. Set up by Learning through Landscapes, the project aims to engage and enthuse children and young people to protect pollinating species in the UK, with the outcome being to see an increase in the number and diversity of pollinating insect species across the UK.
The project is a Heritage Lottery funded biodiversity and education project and this year was entered into The National Lottery Awards, where they won the Best Environment Project 2018.
These awards take place every year to find the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects and athletes and are a real celebration of the ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things with National Lottery funding.
WEN member Felicity Robinson, Director of Landscapes Naturally, does a lot of work through Learning through Landscapes and has been involved in the Polli:Nation project for the last 3 years, working with schools to help achieve the project’s goal of protecting and helping to grow the number of pollinating insect species across the UK. She says “This has been a hugely enjoyable and rewarding project. The enthusiasm of the children and staff has been inspirational. They have taken the pilght of bees and other pollinating insects very seriously and made significant habitat changes in ther grounds”
We think that projects like this are a great way to get your school and students thinking differently about the environment surrounding them and helps to educate them on the real life issues we are currently facing, such as climate change and global warming, and highlights the importance of protecting species that are becoming endangered or even extinct.
