Therese Hoyle provides tips to get kids active outside this summer holidays
How do you plan to keep your children entertained and active during the summer holidays? With the summer break from school approaching, WEN member Therese Hoyle has written several blogs to provide information and tips.
These blogs cover the topics of why it’s important to keep kids active outside in this summer and how you can rekindle your child’s love for skipping.
Her blog ‘Playing Outside in the Summer Months: Why outdoor play is so important’, discusses playing outside in the school playground, however the principles within this blog can be taken and implemented by you at home during this summer break. Here is an extract from the blog: “In schools I have seen the rise in Forest Schools and Learning Outside the Classroom programmes and greater awareness of the importance of Positive Playtimes for children’s wellbeing and learning”.
Another blog post ‘Summer Skipping: Rekindling children’s love of new and old games’, talks about the benefits of encouraging your child to take up the activity of skipping. Here is an extract from the blog “There are many benefits to children skipping, most notably the physical activity it offers. Child obesity levels are rising with current statistics showing that, of children attending reception class (aged 4-5 years) during 2011‒12, 9.5% were obese. It is therefore imperative schools encourage exercise and skipping is an ideal activity to suit all capabilities”.
